End of First Monthly Challenge… Before and After Shots

So I have now completed my first monthly challenge (it was roughly 3 weeks, to be exact).  It started off as juicing but I relaxed it to drinking healthy smoothies.  Here’s the before shot (March 5, 2012):

And here’s the after…. (March 23, 2012)

You can’t see too much but all in all I dropped almost 14 lbs (from approx 200 lbs down to approx 186 lbs).  The first week saw the most dramatic drop, the second was pretty modest and by the third I think my body was adjusting to the new diet and I hardly lost anything.  I cheated a little bit – most notably with two meals – each of them at high-pressure networking events where I did not want to have to explain to everyone that I was fasting.

Everyone has said that the real work will be in keeping the weight off now that I have lost it.  Typically, people (myself included a few years ago) quickly put back on everything they have lost and then some.  So here’s the plan:  The next monthly challenge (which I will start on April 2), will be cooking at eating light Asian food for lunch and dinner.  Here are some of the resources I’ll be using…

What am I doing until April 2?  Well, hopefully playing it safe.  I leave for London later today and with my sister’s wedding and all the traveling I am not going to bother trying to find Asian food as it will get too complicated.  At my next check-in I’ll let you know if I was able to eat conservatively or if I gained 14 lbs in a week…

Do Something (Almost) Impossible

I was downright chubby for most of my childhood.  And although I’ve more or less managed my weight since, I am stocky and can be pushed over the edge to pudge in no time at all.  So losing weight and keeping it off is super tough.  I have always been jealous of friends that don’t seem to gain weight no matter how many buffets they hit.  Such was not my luck in life.

Why this monthly challenge?

Knowing this, and with the urgency of my sister’s March 29 wedding (and all the pictures) upon me, I decided that my first monthly challenge would be to juice for three weeks in order to detox, get healthy and lose weight.  (FYI, the idea behind my monthly challenges is that I will publicly challenge myself to something big that is designed to help me get better at savvy, global do-gooding in one way or another – some detox and weight loss through a different diet therefore fits the criteria.)

Since I started the challenge I have received advice for and against juicing (thanks everyone that gave me advice online and offline).  As mentioned in earlier posts, I soon switched from a purist juicing approach to a diet of smoothies.  The smoothies are more filling and contain the roughage I was missing with the juice and I have been able to integrate some protein in the form of protein shakes after resistance workouts and through nuts, tofu and other protein sources in the smoothies.

Some of the smoothies have been seriously disgusting.  I blended a whole beet into one smoothie and it was all I could do to control my gag reflex drinking that sucker all day at work.  I also messed up and went to shake it without realizing that I had neglected to screw the top on the canister down completely.  I got deep red beet juice all over my crisp white shirt.  As fate would have it I had a major community mixer to go to that night… I kept my cool and blotted the red out enough that it wouldn’t show with a jacket on.

By day 5 or so I was getting the hang of the smoothie making and started enjoying the more palatable creations I was inventing.  I was also losing a near-alarming amount of weight, amounting to over a pound of weight loss per day. To date (and including my unofficial first day of the regimen) I’ve lost over 11 lbs.  As I sit writing this at almost midnight I am not at all hungry.  I have run over 6 miles today AND done some resistance training.  Because I have been putting away a serious amount of smoothies  – many with a major protein component – I’ve been able to slim down while toning up and actually (from what I can tell) gaining muscle.

The way ahead

I am hoping to get down to 170 lbs in time for the wedding which is in 18 days.  That is another 19 lbs from where I weighed in at this morning.  Impossible?  Maybe, but I will give it my best and keep you posted.

Introducing CultureMutt’s First Monthly Challenge – Juicing for Three Weeks

Welcome to my month of March..

A Video Diary

OK, I am delving more into the world of shoddy video shot on my iPhone and I thought a good thing to start doing would be to keep a video diary of sorts.  The loose theme of the videos will be a series of monthly challenges to which I will subject myself (and anyone else who wants to join in.)

Public Accountability

I figure that the fairly public accountability will force me to take this seriously. Each challenge will be designed to bring about some kind of self-improvement, to enable me and you, my wonderful readers to live out the CultureMutt tagline of savvy, global do-gooding.

Challenge #1 – Juice to Lose Weight

The first monthly challenge is basically about being healthy and losing weight so I don’t look like my sister’s chubby brother in all the pictures of her wedding which is coming up in England in just over three weeks.  Here’s a clip with me explaining things a little further….

Jammie and I went shopping and got all of the items above for about $40.  I borrowed the juicer so no cost there…

Luckily, it was super easy to use.  Here’s a quick clip on the basic mechanics…

How does the juice taste? Well, let’s find out…

OK, so the juicer recipes will need a lot of fine-tuning. For now, I am happy that this whole thing is not exhausting me. I feel really alert… one of the early benefits of juicing I guess.

The video updates for this challenge will be posted as often as possible with a minimum of three times a week. Each post will include at least one video and once a week I’ll have a progress (or lack thereof) pic with some stats like the below:
