Your husband is your partner for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, and sometimes, on the Internet. I started writing in August 2013 for Culturemutt, a blog started by my husband, Bjorn. It just made sense to join forces: I’m something of a culture mutt myself (Filipinos are an awesome blend of Austronesian and Hispanic cultures; I call them the “Mutts of the Pacific” — in the most loving way, of course) and I’m also into savvy, global, do-gooding (though I still have way more work to do on the “savvy” part).I’m a former journalist (entertainment editor, copy editor, page designer) for the newspaper industry and I was born and raised in Los Angeles, Calif. with a big, extended Filipino family. I also have lived in Northern California, New York and South Korea.
Currently, Bjorn and I are traveling around the world. I’ll let Bjorn explain more about that below. Take it away, Bjorn!
Hi, I’m Bjorn. Thanks for checking out our About page. I’m originally Swedish but I’m a bit of a mutt since I’ve lived in several different countries and cultures and consider each of them “home”. Hence the name of the blog…
In November, 2012, my wife Jammie and I quit our jobs in Northern California to travel the world, do some good and blog. Not everyone identifies with how we were feeling before we quit our jobs but if you found this blog and are reading this, maybe you do. Put simply, we wanted more out of life. Not necessarily more money or stuff but more adventure, more meaning and more fulfillment.
We decided that the best way for us to find this and to truly live a richer life was to go on a one-year trip around the world. So I quit my position as a fundraiser for a hospital and she quit her job as a journalist. We sold or gave away most of our stuff and then we hopped on a plane.
Here’s our 2013 itinerary:
Bangkok, Thailand: January – March
Buenos Aires, Argentina: April – June
Berlin, Germany: July – September
Several different world cities: October – December
In each of these locations we will be volunteering for charities and non profits that we feel are making a difference in a unique, tangible way.
We are incredibly excited about our new life. And we are so grateful to be able to share it with you.
Jammie and I are spending 2014 based in Bangkok, but still traveling. Stay tuned…
